VINCHIATURO
"Vinchiaturo, one of the 136 townships (comuni) of the present
Province of Molise, lies right in the heart of the Italian peninsula,
in the most northern part of the Mezzogiorno (southern Italy). The town
(i.e. the township's inhabited center) is located at an altitude
above sea level of 2,060 feet.
"The Pass or Saddle of Vinchiaturo (at 1,818 feet) is a famous pass of
the Campanian Apennines, between the valleys of the Biferno and Tammaro
Rivers. It divides the Central Apennines from the Southern. "The
township has about 3,000 inhabitants [2,625 according to the 1991
Italian National Census]. Its territory looks rather flat,
evenconsidering its nonetheless hilly appearance. "The countryside of
Vinchiaturo is dominated by the parish Church of the Holy Cross (Chiesa
parrocchiale di Santa Croce), located in the high part of the town. The
church is neoclassical in style. Its facade is realized in local stone,
as is its four-story bell tower of which the ground story is of square
design and its top three stories are octagonal.
"In the main piazza of the town, Municipal Piazza, is the Fountain of
the Lions (Fontana dei Leoni), where four lions, arranged on four
plinths around the main basin, make the water come out. "In the
territory of the township of Vinchiaturo, on the heightcalled La Rocca,
at an altitude of 3,281 feet, are found the ruins of
one of the oldest churches in the Province of Molise. This church was
originally part of a monastery and had three naves in the romanesque
style; now only part of the central apse, traces of the rectory and of
the external walls survive. "There are many examples of rural
architecture and of urban building in stone in Vinchiaturo. They offer
themselves as examples of the art of stone-working practiced there in
years gone by."

Paese di emigrazione. In cent'anni la popolazione si è
dimezzata, da 4800 abitanti, diventati circa la metà nel 1970.
Dopo tale data l'emigrazione si è fermata. In tutto sono partite
per l'estero tremila persone. La prima emigrazione negli ultimi decenni
del secolo XIX si diresse in Brasile. Dopo il 1915 si diresse in
Argentina e in USA, e a mano a mano anche in Canada. Attualmente
esistono quattro grosse comunità, che si riuniscono inloro
storici sodalizi: - Argentina (300 oriundi, Associazione Vinchiaturesi
in Argentina: AVA, Buenos Aires, presidente Gaetano Iaizzo) -
Québec (300 oriundi, Associazione di Vinchiaturo, Montreal,
riconosciuta dalla Regione Molise nel Registro Regionale, presidenti
Mario Gallo, Bernardino Di Biase;federata alla F.A.M.Q.) - Ontario (300
oriundi, Social Club Vinchiaturo, Toronto, affiliato alla Federazione
delle Associazioni Molisane dell'Ontario;presidente Giovanni D'Amato,
consultore estero della Consulta Regionale
dell'emigrazione) - USA (Società Cattolica di San Bernardino di
New York).
A Vinchiaturo nell'estate 1985 è stato inaugurato il Monumento
all'Emigrante alla presenza di 200 emigrati in Canada, che hanno detto:
"L'abbiamo voluto per i nostri figli, perchè un giorno passando
di qua sappiano da che paese sono partiti". Tra questi era presente il
vinchiaturese Tony Iammatteo, che nel 1986 fu candidato a sindaco di
Saint Leonard, 90.000 abitanti, con molte presenze molisane, uno dei
comuni più importanti della fascia urbana di Montreal.
Fitti sono gli scambi culturali tra questi sodalizi e il Comune di
origine. Annualmente, predispongono di comune intesa viaggi organizzati
verso il Molise. Gli emigrati anziani ormai si sono abituati a questa
periodica scadenza, che quasi annualmente li riporta nei propri luoghi
nativi, per un contatto salutare con l'ambiente, la storia e la
cultura. Trattandosi di un'attività consueta e molto bene
pianificata ed eseguita, riescono sia ad ottenere sovvenzioni regionali
sia a concordare un ricco calendario di visite e manifestazioni
culturali per allietare e rendere significativo il proprio soggiorno.
Non tutti sanno che l'Assessorato Regionale del Turismo (Via Mazzini,
46 - Campobasso) eroga specifici contributi a chi, venendo dall'estero,
effettua viaggi organizzati nel Molise (concorso spese di viaggio) e
che in anticipo si possono concordare iniziative di visite turistiche,
debitamente accompagnate ed animate. E� opportuno, anche, conoscere
anticipatamente il cartellone di tutte le serate.
